When open source code and free software is considered, one of the striking advantages of Linux operating systems that comes to mind is the freedom they offer for the desktop. The desktop managers with different structures and facets can be structured in themselves to get a variety of images.

The most important reason for Microsoft Windows operating systems to be so popular is that they are graphical interface based and this provides ease of use. Despite this advantage, they are not preferred for server systems since they use up system resources and they encounter system block ups due to the faults arising from being graphic interface based. As a result, Unix and Linux operating systems are favored for most server systems.

Although Linux operating systems are terminal based, with the X Windows program that works as an application, they offer the alternative of a graphic interface medium. With different desktop manager programs that operate on X Windows a variety of usage and appearance choices can be obtained.

Information about various desktop manager programs that could be used with Linux operating systems and their Internet pages can be accessed at http://www.xwinman.org Internet address. KDE (http://www.kde.org), Gnome (http://www.gnome.org) and XFCE (http://www.xfce.org) are the most widely used desktop managers that come with most Linux versions.

KDE K Desktop Environment: This is favored due to its close resemblance in appearance to Microsoft Windows operating systems and the graphical interface tools it provides.

GNOME The Free Software Desktop Project: This is another desktop manager application that can operate on different platforms and is proposed as an alternative to KDE.

XFCE Desktop Environment: This is yet another desktop manager preferred by Linux users with its self specific appearance, its performance in using system resources and its constantly developing applications.
